"In my home town of Newark on Trent, I had a neighbour, a widow, who had a cat. Her son was in the Merchant Navy. Once she told me that she always knew when her son was coming home even if he didn't tell her beforehand. The cat would sit on the doormat by the front door and miaouw until he actually got home. "So I always know when I can start to put his tea on", said my neighbour. She was not one of those women who just make up something like this, as if they've maybe decorated the story a little. Her natural way of dealing with this 'paranormal' phenomenon made me think though. Was something strange really happening here Or was it just imagination, the product of superstitious wishful unscientific thinking I soon found that many pet owners had similar tales to tell. In some cases, the animals seemed to know hours beforehand when a member of the family would come home after a long time away. In other, more normal-sounding cases, the animals would get excited shortly before their master or mistress arrived home from work." *
